Bea and her cousin Celine have planned a fun tourist visit in New York City while Aunt Juliette spends a week interviewing and shadowing French actress Eva Rousseau. But their plans quickly take an unexpected turn when the ­Tiffany ­Yellow Diamond is stolen from Eva’s room and Aunt Juliette is arrested! Bea and Celine team up with the hotel owner’s tween son Zach to solve the crime and set Aunt ­Juliette free. While danger does not abound, someone is sending the girls clues leading them all over the city. Can this person and their agenda be trusted? In this solid second “Bea Bellerose” mystery, Beckett-King hits another one out of the park with relatable characters, fun NYC facts, and a neatly solved mystery complete with red herrings and a diverse cast of characters. Readers may need to suspend some disbelief that parents would allow their tween children to explore NYC without an adult and merely with phone trackers enabled. There are tween discussions of crushes, first dates, and kisses. Overall, this is a gentle, well-written read that can be enjoyed just as much as a standalone. Bea is cued white. VERDICT A delightful addition for mystery-loving tween readers; purchase where the first book has been popular.

What follows is a scavenger hunt–style tour of New York City, with clues guiding the girls to such attractions as Grand Central's whispering gallery, the High Line, and the Empire State Building. With the well-developed Big Apple backdrop, larger-than-life characters, and numerous red herrings, the story moves at an engaging clip to the satisfying conclusion. A secondary plotline about Bea’s father pursuing a job in London sets the stage for a third big-city mystery. Great for readers in search of detective stories with a little romance and high-society style.

But when the Tiffany Yellow Diamond necklace Eva is borrowing goes missing, Aunt Juliette is arrested, and the girls investigate, hoping to catch the real thief and prove her innocence. Someone is leaving the girls clues—but are they bringing them closer to the truth, or are they meant to distract? Bea and Céline get help from Zane, the hotel owner’s son (on whom Céline has a crush), as they rush around Manhattan, following clues to landmarks like Grand Central’s Whispering Gallery and the Empire State Building. Technology plays a crucial role, from trackers in suitcases to using a phone for research to surveillance footage. The girls have a lot of independence, though Bea’s parents, who live in New Jersey, check up on them occasionally. Red herrings and Agatha Christie references abound in this zippy, fast-paced mystery. The clashing personality differences between the cousins in the first book have eased; they’re kind and supportive to each other, so the story’s tension comes from the developing mystery and high stakes as Aunt Juliette’s court date approaches.
