About The Book
Count Zrinski spends his days brooding in a crumbling castle, complaining about cold porridge, drafty halls, and the sunshine that dares to sneak through his windows. Only Nikola, his endlessly patient butler, stays by his side—until one extraordinary afternoon, when a single strawberry grows in the castle’s abandoned garden. Not just any strawberry, but one with four leaves instead of three.
When the count takes a bite, the world comes rushing back: the scent of lavender from his mother’s hands, his first love’s laughter, the warmth of home long forgotten. At that moment, the walls he’s built around his heart begin to crack.
Perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, this enchanting story blends gothic humor with a deep, tender magic. Galia Zinko’s lush, fairy-tale-realism illustrations make the castle and its wild garden feel alive with mystery and light.
At its heart, Zrinski is about friendship, second chances, and the quiet miracles that remind us how to feel joy again. Can one tiny berry bring warmth back to a frozen heart—and turn a lonely castle into a home once more?

Count Zrinski, as described by author Galia Zinko, could very well have been the heir to a heroic and powerful family, if its end had not been so tragic. With the execution of the last Zrinski, their noble lineage disappeared from the European aristocratic scene in the 17th century, and the Zrinski family died out at the height of its glory before decadence kicked. Who knows, maybe it's better for them, because history remembers and celebrates only the strong. However, Galia's story fantasizes about the possible fate of the last count from that great lineage. The last living son, without his descendants, would look as grumpy and exhausted loner whose home was not warmed by marital happiness. That home is dark, damp, gloomy and silent without any beauty that would please the eye and soul. He does not rejoice in anything, not even the food. It is difficult to please such a person, like the last Count Zrinski, he can only be followed in step by a forever patient, also alone, obedient servant. But his strict nature and cold heart will be warmed by something unexcepted, just one small stalk of fresh red strawberry. A symbolic fruit that brings the count back to life, evoking the pleasant feelings of childhood, warmth and home that he had long forgotten.
Galia Zinko is a complex author and a rare master, creating both in literature and illustration, with a rare ability of achieving in small amount of pictures and words such depth of main character in the very short literary form of a short story that Russian literati spent hundreds and hundreds of pages on in the past. Every movement and emotion of the main character is described so authentically as if the reader is experiencing it personally. A very combination of realism and fantasy made the work come to life with its own magic and authenticity. With beautiful illustrations that evoke an isolated and somewhat dark fairytale atmosphere, this is a small masterpiece from Galia Zinko's imagination that will touch your soul.
